Declaring a state of emergency, Hungary sealed off its southern border with Serbia on Tuesday and detained those trying to enter illegally, aiming to shut down the flow of migrants pouring in. Chaos ensued at the border, as hundreds of migrants piled up in a no man's land, and Serbian officials reacted with outrage.<br />
<br />
Stuck for an unknown amount of time on a strip of road between the two countries' checkpoints, those fleeing violence in their homelands pitched tents and settled in. But frustrations were on the rise. As a police helicopter hovered above, migrants chanted "Open the border!" and shouted insults at Hungarian riot police. Some refused food and water in protest.<br />
<br />
With a razor-wire fence completed along the Serbian border, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said Hungary now also plans to extend the fence for "a reasonable distance" along its border with Romania.<br />
<br />
Both Serbian and Romanian governments decried Hungary's moves.<br />
<br />
"Raising a fence between two EU member states who are strategic partners is not a fair gesture from a political point of view, according to the European spirit," Romania's Foreign Ministry said.<br />
<br />
Serbia's foreign minister declared it was "unacceptable" that migrants were being sent back from Hungary while more and more were arriving from Macedonia and Greece.<br />
<br />
"(Serbia) wants to be part of the solution, not collateral damage. There will have to be talks in the coming days with Brussels and other countries," Ivica Dacic said in Prague.<br />

The turmoil at the Hungarian-Serbian border came a day after the 28-nation bloc failed to come up with a united immigration policy at a contentious meeting in Brussels. The ministers did agree to share responsibility for 40,000 people seeking refuge in overwhelmed Italy and Greece and spoke hopefully of reaching an eventual deal — next month or by the end of the year — on which EU nations would take 120,000 more refugees, including some from Hungary.<br />

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Austria called Tuesday for a special European Union summit next week to discuss the continent's immigration crisis.<br />
<br />
Hungary, however, was not pinning its hopes on any action soon from Brussels or its neighbors. Tuesday's state of emergency in two southern regions gave authorities greater powers to deal with the crisis, allowing them to shut down roads and speed up asylum court cases.<br />
<br />
In the last few months, Hungary has become a major bottleneck and entry point into the European Union for migrants, many of them war refugees from Syria and elsewhere in the Middle East. Prime Minister Viktor Orban, however, has insisted that most arriving are economic migrants seeking a better life, not war refugees entitled to protection — a view sharply at odds with other EU nations, including Germany.<br />
<br />
The new laws that took effect at midnight in Hungary now make it a crime to cross or damage a 4-meter (13-foot) razor-wire fence the government has built along the southern border with Serbia and also includes longer prison terms for convicted human traffickers.<br />
<br />
"Due to the situation caused by mass migration, the Hungarian government declares a state of crisis," government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs told reporters in the southern city of Szeged. "We are very clear on this: Illegal border crossing is a crime."<br />

Technically, parliament must still approve the deployment of the military, expected next week, but Associated Press reporters at the border have seen heavily armed military personnel with vehicles and dogs for days.<br />
<br />
Gyorgy Bakondi, homeland security adviser to Orban, said authorities caught 155 people trying to cross into the country illegally. They got across by damaging the fence, are now in police custody and are being charged with committing offenses under the new laws. Authorities are quickly repairing the fence.<br />
<br />
Hungarian officials also closed several of the seven border crossings with Serbia on Tuesday morning after deploying a train car covered with razor wire to close one of them. Two crossings were still open for regular traffic.<br />
<br />
Chaos enveloped the main border crossing near Roszke, Hungary, as the Hungarians opened a tiny office in a metal container to process people and crowds pressed to squeeze inside. About 20 managed to get in, but thousands remained outside.<br />
<br />
Another group of migrants blocked the main highway connecting Serbia and Hungary, saying they were refusing food and water until they are allowed to cross into Hungary. "No food, no water until open border," read one sign in English held up by a migrant.<br />
<br />
Elsewhere along the migration route from the Middle East into Europe, asylum-seekers were considering what path to take into Europe with Hungary's border closed and Germany, Austria, Slovakia and the Netherlands reintroducing border controls in recent days to manage the largest refugee crisis Europe has seen since World War II.<br />
<br />
Abolfazl Ebrahimi, a 17-year-old Afghan who was in Athens on Tuesday, said his group plans to pass through Croatia now that Hungary's border is closed.<br />
<br />
"I thought that European people are kind and they will give us rights, but I don't think so (anymore) because the borders between Germany and Austria are closed, and Serbia and Hungary are closed too," he said, speaking at Victoria Square in central Athens.<br />
<br />
Those who managed to make it into Hungary on Monday were grateful to be boarding buses for Austria.<br />
<br />
Zakariah Sharfo, a mechanic from the Syrian city of Aleppo, said he couldn't understand the new hard-line Hungarian laws.<br />
<br />
"Those who leave their country are fleeing because of the pressures of war," he said. "To escape death for a better life and to escape the pressures in our country. No one would leave their country without a good reason."<br />
<br />
Migrants had rushed to beat the Hungarian deadline. A record 9,380 migrants entered Hungary on Monday, beating the previous record of 5,809 set just a day earlier.<br />
<br />
Some 200,000 migrants have entered Hungary so far in 2015, nearly all by walking across the southern border with Serbia. Almost all, however, are on their way to Germany or other wealthy Western European nations.

Thousands of people joined anti-migrant protests in three eastern European capitals on Saturday after leaders from the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia opposed an EU scheme to fix refugee quotas.<br />

In the Polish capital Warsaw, nearly 5,000 people, many chanting anti-Islamic slogans, marched through the city, an AFP correspondent said. “Islam will be the death of Europe”, one of the banners said.<br />
<br />
Organisers claimed the demonstration drew 10,000 people but police refused to confirm the figure.<br />
<br />
“We’re here so that the government hears our voice and abandons any plans to welcome Muslims,” shouted one of the organisers after starting the march with prayers which identified the participants as Roman Catholics.<br />
<br />
Members of far-right fringe parties and football supporters chanted “Poles against migrants” and “Migrants today, terrorists tomorrow”.<br />
<br />
Another thousand or so joined a “Welcome refugees” rally in favour of hosting migrants in Poland, a strongly Catholic EU member state which has a population of 38 million and has seen hardly any newcomers arriving, despite Europe experiencing its biggest movement of people since World War II.<br />

‘My duty’<br />

“I became a refugee when I had to flee Warsaw as the Germans invaded during the war,” 80-year-old Danuta Chomiak told AFP as she marched with the crowd. “I have a duty to be here today.”<br />
<br />
Around 1,500 anti-migrant protestors also rallied in the Slovak capital Bratislava, some holding up banners reading: “You’re not welcome here so go home”, an AFP correspondent said.<br />

Another said: “Multiculturalism is a utopia, don’t open the borders”.<br />
<br />
The rally was organised by the far-right “Our Slovakia” party, led by Marian Kotleba.<br />
<br />
Unlike neighbouring Austria and Hungary, Slovakia  — a eurozone member of 5.4 million people — has seen few migrant arrivals this summer.<br />
<br />
Police in the Czech capital Prague said some 800 people protested against the arrival of refugees and migrants, holding up banners saying: “Send them back!” and “Protect the borders”.<br />

Demonstrators called on the Czech government to resign and for a withdrawal from the European Union which it joined in 2004.<br />

Elsewhere another 200 people staged a counter-demonstration in support of welcoming refugees in the Czech Republic, which has a population of 10.5 million and has seen few new arrivals in recent months.<br />

All poorer members of the EU, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic on Friday ruled out accepting refugees under a compulsory quota system outlined by the European Commission, rejecting German pleas for European solidarity in tackling the crisis.<br />

While the US is looking back at the 14 year anniversary of what is widely accepted as the biggest terrorist event in modern US history, in Europe it is time to look forward to what may be the advent of domestic “terrorism” in the coming months, whether real or false flagged.<br />

Earlier this week, one of our contributors Erico Tavares pointed out something disturbing, namely that in Europe’s perpetual search for “crises” on which to capitalize in its relentless encroachment to a European superstate, the current migrant crisis may be a blessing in disguise (assuming, of course, it wasn’t premeditated from day one as others have suggested).<br />

Why blessing? Because just like the US Patriot Act which allowed a massive expansion of the US government apparatus while obliterating civil and privacy rights (highlighted earlier today), confirmed a decade later by Edward Snowden, was a regulation in search of a terrorist event, so Europe’s next superstate expansion will require a comparable anti-terrorism “rush” in which the population voluntarily hands Europe’s supra-government even more rights to centrally-plan as it sees fit.<br />

Which means that as part of the refugee crisis in which tens of thousands of innocent Syrians have been displaced and seeking European asylum, it was only a matter of time before one or more was “found” to be ISIS terrorists in order to perpetuate the fear and crisis narrative. A crisis which Brussels would never go to waste.<br />
<br />
That time has arrived following a report by German RTL and carried by NewObserver that “an ISIS terrorist posing as an “asylum seeker” has been arrested by German police in a “refugee” center in Stuttgart, and German customs officers have seized boxes containing Syrian passports being smuggled into Europe.”<br />
<br />
So it begins.<br />
<br />
According to RTL, the terrorist is a 21-year-old Moroccan using a “false identity” who had registered as an asylum seeker in the district of Ludwigsburg. He was identified after police linked him to a European arrest warrant issued by the Spanish authorities. He is accused of recruiting fighters for ISIS, where he acted as a contact person for fighters who wanted to travel to Syria or Iraq.<br />
<br />
This arrest of the alleged bogus “asylum seeker” comes at the same time that a German finance ministry spokesman said that “boxes” of fake Syrian passports, destined for sale and distribution to the hordes of nonwhite invaders seeking to settle in Europe as bogus “war refugees,” had been seized.”<br />
<br />
That news, carried in a report by the German Tagespiegel newspaper, also revealed that 10,000 fake Syrian passports were seized by police in Bulgaria, on their way to Germany.<br />
<br />
The finance ministry official said both genuine and forged passports were in the packets intercepted in the post. Possession of these passports is a vital part of claiming “asylum” as “war refugees.”<br />
The Tagespiegel also revealed that the fake Syrian passports are being sold for about $1,500 each—and the fact that many of the “refugees” can afford to buy multiple passports is yet another indication of the bogus nature of their claims to be “asylum seekers.”<br />
<br />
Significantly, the Tagespiegel article continued, “It is not only Syrians who are interested in Syrian passports. Refugees from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan want to become Syrian in order to secure their recognition as asylum seekers in Western Europe. According to press reports, nine out of ten refugees who came from Macedonia to Serbia claimed they were Syrians.”<br />
<br />
Setting the expectations was the head of the EU frontier police, Fabrice Leggeri, who in a recent interview with the Europe 1 TV station said that the trade in fake Syrian passports originated in Turkey. “There are people who are now in Turkey, buying false Syrian passports because they have obviously realized that it is a windfall since Syrians get asylum in all Member States in the European Union,” he said. “People who use false Syrian passports often speak in Arabic. They may originate in North Africa or the Middle East, but have the profile of economic migrants.”<br />
<br />
And then just to ratchet the fear factor, earlier this week Hungary’s most watched national TV channel, M1, reported Tuesday that at least two “terrorists” were uncovered via photographs on social media after entering Europe as refugees.<br />
<br />
“Islamist terrorists, disguised as refugees, have showed up in Europe. [The] pictures were uploaded on various social networks to show that terrorists are now present in most European cities. Many, who are now illegal immigrants, fought alongside Islamic State before,” the report said.<br />
<br />
The Hungarian channel broadcasted collections of photographs of the two men from social media. The first set depicted two individuals with weapons and the second set showed them smiling as they arrived in Europe.<br />
<br />
A breach in the “terrorism has arrived” narrative emerged it was revealed that the man claimed to be an Islamic State militant had previously given aninterview to AP, saying that he was a former Syrian rebel commander. “The AP reported that his name was Laith Al Saleh, 30, and he “led a 700-strong rebel unit in Syria’s civil war.” The news agency’s photos taken on August 15 showed Al Saleh among other refugees waiting to board an Athens-bound ferry on the Greek island of Kos.”<br />
<br />
And then it gets awkward: AP reported that he was a member of the Free Syrian Army, which is fighting against the Syrian government forces of President Bashar Assad, as well as against terrorist groups in the region.<br />
<br />
Actually, the US-funded and supported FSA’s only purpose was the same as that of ISIS – to crush the Syrian army and overthrow the elected president so Qatar can break Gazprom’s monopoly on European gas imports.<br />
<br />
But now the second key role of ISIS is also starting to emerge: the terrorist bogeyman that ravages Europe and scares the living daylight out of people who beg the government to implement an even more strict government apparatus in order to protect them from refugees ISIS terrorists.<br />
<br />
But ignore the facts, and focus on the propaganda, which as RT further adds is in full crisis mode: A recent article in the UK Express Daily claimed that IS “smuggled thousands of covert jihadists into Europe.” It cited a January BuzzFeed interview with an IS operative who said the militants have already sent some 4,000 fighters into Europe under guise of refugees.<br />
<br />
These speculations have not been confirmed by Western security officials, although that’s only temporary: as the need to ratchet up the fear factor grows, expect more such reports of asylum seekers who have penetrated deep inside Europe, and whose intentions are to terrorize the public. Expect a few explosions throw in for good effect.<br />
<br />
Certainly expect a version of Europe’a Patriot Act to emerge over the next year, when the old continent has its own “September 11” moment, one which will provide the unelected Brussels bureaucrats with even more authoritarian power.<br />
<br />
And since everyone knows by now “not to let a crisis go to waste” the one thing Europe needs is a visceral, tangible crisis, ideally with chilling explosions and innocent casualties. We expect one will be provided on short notice.

In some cases, Europeans who went to Syria returned home to stage deadly attacks — such as the French suspect in a 2014 attack on a Jewish museum in Belgium, who had come back from fighting with extremists in Syria.<br />

Authorities around Europe have repeatedly warned of the threat posed by the return of Western jihadis, trained in warfare in the Mideast. France counts at least 1,200 citizens in the war zone in Syria — headed there, returned or dead. Both the Islamic State group and al-Qaida have threatened France, home to Western Europe's largest Muslim population.<br />

But Damascus is not forcing anyone out, al-Zoubi said. "Any Syrian abroad can return to his country anytime he wants," he added.<br />

Illegal Muslim refugee trafficking is now creating chaos at the Greece-Macedonia border and the constant flood of boats arriving from Libya reveal a network that uses structured routes that seem unstoppable as they generate money for the mafia and the terrorist organizations involved like ISIS.<br />

This scenario seems to fit perfectly with a secret plan of the New World Order known as the Coudenhove-Kalergi Plan that some people in European right-wing circles say was created for the systematic genocide of the people of Europe.<br />

This plan was apparently devised by an Austrian diplomat and Freemason named Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi (1894- 1972). The Kalergi family roots can be traced back to Byzantine royalty via Venetian aristocracy. Coudenhove-Kalergi was actually the first proponent of a unified Europe back in the 1920s and for this reason Coudenhove-Kalergi is recognized as the founder of the first popular movement for a United Europe.<br />
<br />
The Coudenhove-Kalergi European Prize is awarded every two years to European leaders who have excelled in promoting what is beyond any political or religious ideology. Angela Merkel and Herman Van Rompuy, two of the top pawns in the Bilderberg Club, have received this award in recent years.<br />
<br />
<br />
Coudenhove-Kalergi’s father, initially an anti-semite, later became a close friend of Theodor Herzl, the founder of Zionism, but his son, Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi, also has strong connections with the Catholic elite due to his aristocratic status.<br />
<br />
In 1922, he co-founded the Pan-European Union (PEU) with Archduke Otto von Habsburg, a staunch Catholic who was the head of the Habsburg dynasty and former Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary. He became involved with the Pan-European Union after becoming Grand Master and Sovereign of the highly influential Order of the Golden Fleece in 1922. Otto became International President of the PEU in 1973, after Coudenhove’s death.<br />
<br />
According to Coudenhove-Kalergi’s autobiography, at the beginning of 1924 through Baron Louis de Rothschild he was in contact with Max Warburg, who offered to finance his movement for the next 3 years giving him 60,000 gold marks.<br />
<br />
The Coudenhove-Kalergi Plan becomes evident in 1925 when he writes in Practical Idealism (Praktischer Idealismus): “The man of the future will be of mixed race. Today’s races and classes will gradually disappear owing to the vanishing of space, time, and prejudice. The Eurasian-Negroid race of the future, similar in its appearance to the Ancient Egyptians, will replace the diversity of peoples with a diversity of individuals.”<br />
<br />
This book is very hard to get a hold of today. In Germany the book is practically censored, although it isn’t present on the official list of books censored by the German government. In 1990, the publishing company, “Independent News,” [Unabhängige Nachrichten], published a summary of the book and contemplated printing it in it’s entirety, but the government initiated a police search of the premises and the only copy of Praktischer Idealismus was confiscated. The book is not mentioned on the official internet pages of the Pan-European Movement, which is understandable because its content is directly in opposition to the movement’s official program.<br />
<br />
Coudenhove-Kalergi suggested Beethoven’s hymn as the EU’s national anthem and was very active in connection with the design of the EU logo which contains masonic symbols. He was initiated in Freemasonry in the Humanitas Lodge in Vienna in the early 1920’s but left in 1926 to avoid the heavy criticism which occurred as a result of the relationship between the Pan-European movement and Freemasonry. Some say later, in 1947, he founded the powerful Ur-Lodge Pan-Europa that is still active to this day and draws members from the political and economic elite.<br />
<br />
Coudenhove-Kalergi’s ground work prepared the EU for what many Christian’s familiar with the prophecies of “The Book of Revelation” perceive as “The New Holy Roman Empire.”<br />
The socialist elite of Europe born out of Coudenhove-Kalergi’s plan have created a United Europe backed by the Vatican under a centralized government, a system that actually will be the prototype for the US and the rest of the world when the New World Order is finalized.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, tensions rise as the Muslim population is being pushed like never before towards Europe to fulfill “The Kalergi Plan.” This will create civil unrest and wars in most areas of southern Europe almost certainly by the 2020’s facilitating population reduction.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he is "horrified and heartbroken" by the latest deaths in Austria and at sea.<br />
<br />
In a rare statement issued under his name and not a spokesman, he stresses that a "large majority" of people undertaking such dangerous journeys are refugees who have the right to protection and asylum.<br />
<br />
He calls on all governments to act with compassion and humanity.<br />
<br />
Ban also says the conflicts and repression that force people to flee must be resolved. "The Syrian war, for example, has just been manifested on a roadside in the heart of Europe," he says.<br />
<br />
He plans a "special meeting devoted to these global concerns" on Sept. 30, during the annual General Assembly of world leaders at U.N. headquarters.<br />

According to new figures by the International Organization for Migration, over 332,000 migrants have crossed the Mediterranean Sea this year to reach Europe.<br />

At least 2,636 people have died in the attempt, it said.<br />

A migration agency says in the last day, more than 480 migrants have been brought to the southern Italian island of Lampedusa.<br />

The trip from Turkey to Greece's eastern islands is one of the shortest, safest trips by sea to Europe — but it still can be terrifying for migrants making the crossing in the pitch dark.<br />

Nour Kady, a 30-year-old Syrian, said Friday he had paid $2,200 to Turkish smugglers for the two-hour journey to the Greek island of Lesbos by boat for himself, his wife and their 1-year-old son.<br />
He called the trip harrowing, with 60 people crammed into a 9-meter (29-foot) boat. He says "we set out at 2 a.m., the sea was rough, there were big waves."<br />

So far this year, 200,000 migrants have entered Greece, according to new figures Friday from the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. Another 110,000 have reached Italy.<br />

A Libyan navy spokesman in Tripoli says his militia-backed government simply doesn't have the ships or equipment to handle the surge of migrants using the lawless Libyan coast as a transit point for Europe.<br />

At least 105 migrants have died in the last two days as two overcrowded smugglers' boats capsized off Libya — and U.N. authorities fear at least 100 other migrants are missing in the disaster.<br />
Navy spokesman Ayoub Qassem says "the coast guard's capabilities are very weak and that's what contributes to the rise in migration."<br />

His government has been fighting a separate internationally recognized Libyan government in the east, a chaotic split that has made Libya an easy place for smugglers to operate.<br />

The passport police chief for the western coastal city of Zuwara, Anwar Abu el-Deeb, says his department can't even estimate how many smugglers' boats leave the city every day, heading to Italy.<br />

Exhausted and thirsty in the hot sun, hundreds of migrants who have finally reached Hungary from Serbia are demanding that Hungarian authorities speed up the registration process.<br />
<br />
Hungarian police were directing migrants Friday to a gathering point outside Roszke before taking them into town by bus to be registered. But transportation delays and long waits without water in temperatures near 32 degrees Celsius (nearly 90 degrees Fahrenheit) rankled the migrants.<br />
<br />
The migrants chanted "We want to go to camp!" as police looked on. One man from Syria said "people are angry because nobody respects us."<br />
<br />
Hungary's governing Fidesz party said, meanwhile, it will propose setting up transit zones on the border where migrants would have to wait until their asylum requests were decided. Hungary has already built a razor-wire border fence but the migrants are easily climbing over or under it.<br />

Syrians on the road in Europe miss their native country but are hopeful about prospects for a better life in Europe.<br />

Bashar Botros, who was walking Friday through a migrant camp in Kanjiza, a northern Serbian town near the Hungarian border, says Syria "is a lovely country." He says his family had hoped to live there for the rest of their lives "but the war didn't let us live like normal people."<br />
<br />
Yamen Hatem, another Syrian at the camp, said after the civil war began life got much harder with "checkpoints everywhere and bombs." He said beginning a new life in Europe is "going to be hard" but he's determined to make it work.<br />
<br />
Botros, who wants to go to Germany and enroll in college, was trying to learn German on his mobile phone. He says he's aiming for Germany because "it has the best universities in the world ... I am very excited, actually, to study in Germany."<br />

Hungarian police say they have arrested 21 suspected human traffickers in Budapest.<br />
<br />
Those arrested Wednesday and Thursday included 16 Romanians, two Syrians, two Hungarians and a Russian citizen. Police said Friday that 16 cars or vans also were confiscated, which had been carrying 112 migrants, including several Syrians, in addition to the traffickers.<br />
<br />
The migrants were traveling along the Balkans route into the European Union. The route goes from Turkey by sea to Greece, then up to Macedonia, through Serbia and Hungary, then west to claim asylum in wealthier EU nations like Germany, Austria and Sweden.<br />
<br />
In a related case, Austrian police found 71 migrants dead Thursday in a food truck parked along the main highway to Vienna from Budapest. Police say the migrants likely suffocated.<br />

Prosecutors in Sicily say they have detained 10 people on suspicion of smuggling and murder for having allegedly crammed dozens of migrants into the airless hold of a boat where 52 bodies were found this week.<br />
<br />
Carmine Mosca, head of the Palermo police squad, said Friday that survivors of the deadly Mediterranean crossing recounted how the smugglers would beat the migrants back with knives if they tried to come out of the hold for air.<br />
<br />
Palermo prosecutor Maurizio Scalia said the detained crew included seven Moroccans, two Syrians and a Libyan. The bodies of the dead arrived in Palermo late Thursday and autopsies were being performed Friday.<br />
<br />
Officials believe the migrants likely died of asphyxiation. Scalia said the hull of the 20-meter (66-foot) boat contained about 60 people but was only a meter (3 feet) high, with two small windows and the boat's engine.<br />

Hussein Asheini, the head of Libya's Red Crescent in the coastal city of Zuwara, says at least 105 migrants have drowned off the Libyan coast when their boat capsized.<br />

He says Friday some died after being trapped inside the boat. Fishermen and the coast guard found the waterlogged vessel at sea Thursday and towed it back to Zuwara, where they had to break the ship's deck to reach the people trapped inside.<br />
<br />
He says½a0}"the boat sank out at sea, and a coast guard team is still diving in and checking inside to see if there's anyone else." He said there's conflicting casualty figures and the Red Crescent is still counting the bodies and the survivors.<br />

The U.N. refugee agency says up to 200 people are missing and feared dead after two smugglers' boats carrying an estimated 500 migrants capsized off the western Libyan coast. The U.N. says so far 100 survivors have been rescued from the boats.<br />

Scuffles and some fights are breaking out among the more than 1,000 migrants, including families with young children, gathered at Greece's northern border with Macedonia.<br />

Macedonian authorities are allowing up to 50 people to cross at a time, with more arriving by the busload all day at the informal crossing outside the Greek village of Idomeni. Once in Macedonia, the migrants board trains or buses heading north to Serbia.<br />
<br />
A Greek border policeman estimates about 1,000 people are crossing in an eight-hour period every day. The officer spoke anonymously because he was not authorized to speak publicly.<br />
<br />
About 300 of the migrants had arrived Thursday and spent the chilly night in the open, lighting small fires to keep warm. Aid organizations including Doctors Without Borders were providing medical help, shelter, food and water. Most were from Syria and Afghanistan.<br />

A Hungarian national police spokeswoman says four people are in custody in connection with the 71 migrants who suffocated to death in a refrigerated truck found parked on a main Austrian highway.<br />
Police spokeswoman Viktoria Csiszer-Kovacs says Friday the four detained Thursday in Hungary include three Bulgarian citizens and one person from Afghanistan. One of the Bulgarians is the owner of the truck. Nearly 20 other people were questioned as witnesses and houses connected to the case were also searched.<br />

Austrian police chief Hans Peter Doskozil says police believe the suspects are part of a larger Bulgarian-Hungarian smuggling ring. Two Hungarian police detectives are in Austria, helping with the case.<br />

In the wake of migrant deaths at sea and on land, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees is urging authorities to crack down on the smuggling trade and to expand safe, legal ways for refugees to reach Europe.<br />

Melissa Fleming, the spokeswoman for the U.N. refugee agency in Geneva, says Friday that the deaths of 71 migrants who were being smuggled into Austria in a refrigerated truck "is just absolutely shocking."<br />

She says "we believe this underscores the ruthlessness of people smugglers who have expanded their business from the Mediterranean Sea to the highways of Europe. It shows they have absolutely no regard for human life."<br />

Fleming also says the deaths show "the desperation of people seeking protection or a new life in Europe."<br />

Greece's coast guard says it has rescued 665 migrants at sea in 20 search-and-rescue operations off the islands of Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Agathonissi, Kos and Megisti in the 24 hours from Thursday morning to Friday morning.<br />

The figures do not include the hundreds more who reach the islands' shores from the nearby Turkish coast each day, most of them using inflatable dinghies. The vast majority of those arriving in Greece are Syrian and Afghan refugees.<br />

The migrants pouring into Greece are hoping to travel north via the Balkans and apply for asylum in wealthy European Union nations like Germany, Austria or Sweden. Greece, Macedonia, Serbia and Hungary have been overwhelmed this summer by the tens of thousands of migrants traveling through their countries.<br />

Othman Belbeisi, chief of mission for the International Organization for Migration for Libya, said Friday that the number rescued Thursday from two overcrowded smugglers' boats off the coast of Libya included nine women and two girls.<br />
<br />
The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says an estimated 200 migrants are missing and feared dead after the two migrant boats capsized off Libya.<br />

Belbeisi said 400 people had been packed onto one of the boats.<br />

The U.N. agency says Friday the Libyan Coast Guard conducted two rescue operations seven miles off the Libyan port city of Zuwara. Two boats carrying an approximate total of 500 migrants were intercepted Thursday and the survivors taken to shore in Libya.<br />

An Associated Press photographer saw workers on Thursday night pulling out bodies floating in the water and loading other bodies in orange bags onto the back of a pickup truck. It was not clear how many migrants had drowned.<br />

Dozens of barely seaworthy smugglers' boats packed with migrants are launched from lawless Libya each week, mainly heading to Italy. On Wednesday, authorities found the bodies of 52 migrants who had been trapped in the hull of one migrant boat north of Libya. Another 439 people from that boat were rescued.<br />

Austrian police investigating the deaths of 71 migrants found in truck along a main highway say they likely suffocated to death.<br />

Hans Peter Doskozil, chief of police in Austria's eastern Burgenland province where the tragedy occurred, gave both the death toll and the cause of death Friday at a news conference in the city of Einsenstadt.<br />
<br />
He also said Hungarian police detained seven suspects in the case overnight and early Friday, then arrested three of them. He said two of the suspects are Bulgarians, while the third has Hungarian identity papers.<br />

He said a Syrian travel document was found among the bodies, which suggests that at least some of the 59 men, eight women and four children who died were fleeing the violence in that nation.<br />
