Iran has discovered a large reserve of uranium and is going to start extracting the radioactive element soon, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization said on Saturday. "The important thing is that before aerial prospecting for uranium ores we were not too optimistic, but the new discoveries have made us confident about our reserves," Iranian nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi said, adding that uranium exploration had covered about two-thirds of the country and would be complete in the next four years, the IRNA state news agency reports. The discovery comes just two months after Iran and six world powers signed a nuclear deal and may change previous assessments that Iran will need to import uranium because of low supplies.
