One of the world's most vocal global-warming scientists has put his name to a scientific paper which says that even if humanity deliberately sets out to burn all the fossil fuels it can find, as fast as it can, there will be no troublesome sea level rise due to melting Antarctic ice this century.</div>

Dr Ken Caldeira's credentials as a global warmist are impeccable. He is not a true green hardliner - he has signed a plea to his fellow greens to get over their objections to nuclear power, for instance, and he doesn't totally rule out geoengineering as a possible global-warming solution. But that's as far as he'll go: in Dr Caldeira's view, it is plain and simple unethical to release greenhouse gases into the air. There's no middle ground on that as far as he's concerned - he's not OK with gas power as an alternative to coal, for instance.</div>

But he's a scientist, and like all proper scientists he's willing to admit inconvenient truths. In this case, the truth in question is his own prediction that no matter what humans do in the way of carbon emissions, sea levels are not going to rise by more than 8cm this century due to melting Antarctic ice. For context, the seas have been rising faster than that for thousands of years. They rose 17cm just during the 20th century, and the Antarctic cap is far and away the biggest body of ice on the planet.</div>

That prediction comes as part of a new study just out by Caldeira and some of his climatologist colleagues, in which they take a look at what happens to the Antarctic ice if humanity burns varying amounts of the available fossil-fuel reserves thought to exist.</div>

The headline on the accompanying press release is much more in line with what Dr Caldeira and his colleagues were seeking to show: "Burning all fossil energy would raise sea-level by more than 50 meters".</div>

That certainly sounds pretty scary. But the fact is that the study starts with some pretty extreme assumptions - in particular, it assumes that no matter how much fossil fuel humanity decides to burn, it will burn it all very fast - in a "pulse" lasting no more than a few hundred years, with rates of emissions multiplying to many times their present level in the extreme scenario. This assumption is necessary, as CO<span style="font-size: 11.2px; position: relative; top: 0.3em; vertical-align: baseline;"><small>2</small></span> disappears from the atmosphere over long periods, so the rapid burning is needed to force carbon levels up to scary values where properly scary things might happen.</div>

But carbon emissions certainly are going up pretty fast, so it's not crazy of the scientists to make such assumptions. That's not the problem with the study.</div>

The problem is that, yes, they might be right and all the Antarctic ice might well melt if all the coal and oil and shale and everything is burned as fast as we can burn it. But - according to their modelling - this increased melting will take at least a thousand years, probably more. And, crucially, it will not really get rolling at all until well after the year 2100.</div>

Even if we're on the burn-it-all road, we're looking at a not-so-terrifying 8cm of sea level rise over the next 85 years. You, and your children, and your children's children, can pretty much relax. Your many-times-great grandchildren - assuming they haven't gone off and colonised Mars or something - may have had to move house. But America builds more than half a million new homes every year, enough to rehouse every American threatened by an entire <i>metre</i> of sea rise in just four years, and a metre isn't coming sooner than 2200AD according to Dr Caldeira and his colleagues. So that probably isn't something to fret over too much, especially as you would have to hope, on that kind of timescale, that some of them at least might be living in airborne houseboats or floating cities or something a bit futuristic, even if they haven't moved offworld.</div>

On the timescale at which the study predicts actual major sea-level rise, people really had better have got cracking on the space travel and associated proper advanced technologies, or the risk of human civilisation being wiped out in some non-carbon-related disaster - asteroid strike or other cosmic event, for instance - becomes rather more disquieting than having to move house and get stronger air conditioning.</div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Winter is coming, and it could be colder and snowier than normal after forecasters predicted that this year’s El Nino weather phenomenon could be the strongest since 1950. </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Met Office meteorologists said conditions could mirror those of the 2009/2010 winter which was so long and chilly it was dubbed ‘The Big Freeze.’</span><br />

Our Sun is now entering a cycle known as a Solar Grand Minimum, which happens on average every 400-450 years. The last of these grand minimums was called "The Maunder Minimum" and took place around 1600AD. This coincides with a climate period known as "The Little Ice Age"</span></i></h3>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">That winter, heavy snowfall brought transport chaos to much of the country with airports closed and train services suspended. In parts of Scotland temperatures dropped to -8.1F (-22.3C) as record 19 inch snowfall fell in the highlands. In December that year, the average UK temperature was just 30F (-1C) the coldest since records began.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">This year's El Nino looks set to be more powerful than usual with forecasters predicting the strongest since 1950. In that year Britain suffered one of its snowiest winters ever. Snow lay for 102 days in the Highlands while 15 inches fell on the Isle of Wight in just three and half hours. Bournemouth saw 10 inches, Scarborough and Lowestoft, 14 inches.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The weather phenomenon happens when ocean temperatures in the eastern Pacific, near South America, rise due to a change in the normal wind direction, creating knock-on effects across the globe due to the amount of heat released into the atmosphere.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Met Office meteorologist and BBC forecaster Thomas Shafernaker said: “This time round it could be the strongest in decades.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">“In Europe sometimes winters end up much colder and drier and last much into spring. In 2010 the El Nino played a part in bringing huge amounts of snow to the UK.”</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Met Office climatologist Dr Dan Smith said El Nino was one of the most important factors for the UK winter, but added that it was too early to tell just how big an impact the phenomenon would have on British weather. The 2010 storm was made worse because El Nino coincided with a solar minimum.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">And because each El Nino event is unique, it is impossible to say exactly what the consequences will be for any given year. Dr Smith said the phenomenon was not linear and so a medium strength El Nino could actually cause more disruption than a strong one.</span></div>

"This is then called a Modiki type El Nino with warm sea surface temperatures in the mid Pacific.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Besides this latest example of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gore_Effect" style="color: #885500;">Gore Effect</a>, the dirty little secret is that the climate is always changing, and what better place to illustrate the role of Mother Nature (not humans) than in Alaska?</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><strong>Extreme Weather</strong><br />Alaska weather matches its geography – extreme. Temperatures there have ranged from 100 deg F (in 1915) to 80 below zero F (in 1971). Summer days are so long that they can grow pumpkins weighing over 1,000 lbs. Nevertheless, yearly average temperatures are actually below freezing — even in the warmest years.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><strong>Glaciers were Already Retreating Before 1900</strong><br />The supposed poster child glacier for global warming in Alaska is Mendenhall Glacier…except that it had already <a href="http://juneauempire.com/stories/010501/Com_Glacier.shtml#.VeNy3PmBRiZ" style="color: #885500;">retreated one mile by the early 1900s</a>, long before human greenhouse gas emissions could be blamed.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Furthermore, its retreat is <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2451640/Mendenhall-Glacier-melting-reveals-ancient-forest.html" style="color: #885500;">uncovering large tree stumps</a> approximately 1,000 years old, coincidentally coinciding with the (naturally-caused) Medieval Warm Period, back when the Vikings were able to farm in Greenland.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Which begs the question: How could it have been warm enough to grow giant trees 1,000 years ago in an area now covered in ice? We don’t know why it was so warm 1,000 years ago—climate scientists don’t like to talk about it because they can’t explain it — but for some reason they are sure that your SUV is causing current warmth.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><strong>Alaska’s Recent Warmth is Mostly Due to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation</strong><br />NOAA’s official average temperature product for Alaska, even after they’ve made innumerable and controversial adjustments, shows cooling from the 1920s to the late 1970s, then sudden warming associated with the <a href="http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/res/div/ocp/arch/climate_shift.shtml" style="color: #885500;">Great Climate Shift of 1977</a>:</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">This shift was due to a natural reversal of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, a 60 year cycle which affects the atmospheric steering currents in Alaska, determining whether cold polar air or warm Pacific air tends to win out as the two air masses continually battle for control over Alaska weather.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Alaskans are used to tremendous extremes in weather throughout the year. The tree stump evidence by itself suggests it was warmer there 1,000 years ago than today.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Yet, President Obama will no doubt wax eloquent about how all weather and glacier changes in Alaska (1) have been brought on by humans, and (2) are bad. I’m sure this is what’s taught in schools now, and many will believe it.</span></div>
